Climate
October to May offers a comfortable relief from the lowland Tanzania
heat with mild temperatures, although June through September can get
quite cold - even approaching freezing at night - so bring sweaters
and long-sleeved shirts. Days are warm when the sun is shining,
but it gets cool on cloudy and windy days. It is comfortable sitting
around a fire throughout the year. The main rainy season is between
mid-march and the end of June. Because of the high elevation of the
Usambaras, sun screen is recommended at all times of the year.
Getting There
By Bus: The portal of the East Usambaras is Muheza, about
halfway between Segera and Tanga on the Tanga - Arusha/Moshi road. Passengers
from Dar Es Salaam or upcountry areas need to board Tanga
buses and then get of at Muheza. There are local buses to the Nature
Reserve.
By Car: All roads to Muheza are excellent, though a 4x4
vehicle is recommended from Muheza to Amani. Drivers from Arusha/Moshi pass Mombo and Korogwe on the way to
Muheza. Drivers
from Dar Es Salaam follow the Lushoto directions but turn right at
Segera [35 km to Muheza].
Entry Fees
Currently, all adult visitors have an entry fee of US$ 5
while those visitors under 18 years of age pay half - children below
five years of age visit for free. Vehicle charges are US$ 2 for
vehicles weighing under two tons and US$ 4 for vehicles weighing
above two tons.
