Amani Nature Reserve, in the East Usambara Mountains in northeast
Tanzania, was gazetted in 1997. It is situated in the Muheza
District, Tanga Region and covers 8360 ha between approximately 190m
and 1130m above sea level, encompassing submontane, lowland and
plantation forest.
The Amani Nature Reserve is
the largest block of forest in the East Usambara Mountains; it is an
amalgation of six former forest reserves [Amani Sigi, Amani East,
Amani West, Kwamsambia, Kwamkoro and Mnyuzi], 1068 ha of forest
donated by the East Usambara Tea Company and public land.
In terms of conservation, it is significant as habitat for large
number of endemic and threatened species - the reserve is home to
seven endangered and 26 vulnerable species according to IUCN
categories. The reserve has a high diversity of reptiles and
amphibians. Six animal species and one subspecies recorded are
endemic to the Usambara Mountains.
